deferred_particles

I’ve had this idea for a quite time now (few years I guess), but haven’t released it because it felt so stupid. Yes, just good old fashioned stupid, simple, idea. But it has some extremely good benefits that cannot be ignored.

If you check out my programming experiments from the past 10 years you’ll see a lot of particles. For some reason I keep on coming back to them. Always looking for ways to get more of them to the screen. But also trying to find new ways to render them, not just how they move, but also what sort of pixels I can draw to/with them.

Today I would like to introduce a new way of rendering particles.

Porsche Black Edition

Thanks to Porsche, good people of UDG – United Digital Group and Technical Director Frank Reitberger, I was selected as one of three digital artist to collaborate with them to create a WebGL art piece around the new Porsche design line; The Black Edition. Other two artists were very well known old fellows Mario Klingemann and Frederik Vanhoutte.

In this post I’ll explain some of the technical things needed to get my particles dance with the engine sound in maximum quality and performance. Technology used for this piece was Fuse and its awesome programming language Uno.

More progress with the next APEXvj. Hexacons are cool. As you can see it has a brand new, relatively fast and perhaps good looking, shadows on it. Next one will be about spaceships…

Nugget

Here’s the second “work in progress”-release of the next APEXvj. This one contains two scenes and four post-process effects. The sound analyzer code is rewritten as well.

Plan is to get this thing work in mobile, browser and desktop so I’ve decided to use only one draw call. It’s enough for a lot of cases and the Uno.Scenes.Batch class is pretty darn awesome for this. It allows me quickly create extra vertex buffers and only compiles those that I use.

The nugget geometry is made of truncated Tetrahedron. Used random values to determine how much corners are cut and in what angle. This way they all look a bit different. They all also have a different way of rotating, which obviously changes based on music.

For this release I’ve made a rather ambitious goal to make every scene construct based on sound, not just the camera movement or flashing lights. Let’s see how well that turns out..

You can change the post-process with 1,2,3,4-keys and the scene with Q and W-keys.

APEXvj 2.0 was a huge challenge for me in so many ways. Most of it is something I’ve learned during last six months or so. From technical point of view I feel like I have found new horizons to explore. And design wise… oh well same shiz as always :)

In this post I’m covering several topics. So if you find some of them boring just keep on scrolling down.

After six years of experimenting I decided to capture all the effects and demos into video format. This way first world snobs with smartphones and tablets can view my stuff too. Site is made in flash-killer-HTML5 and it even has some flash-terminator-CSS3 stuff on it. It’s build upon WordPress and involves technologies such as php, mysql, javascript and less.

The content is mostly Flash which is coded in ActionScript 3, Pixel Bender and AGAL. Used Chrome, Firefox and mainly Safari for developing and testing. Photoshop for layout and Flash IDE for vector graphics plus some Illustrator. Screenium for video capturing and Media Encoder for compressing. Videos are streamed from vimeo.com and fonts from Google. I used Coda for html/css/js/php coding, Sequel Pro for database and FDT5 for AS.

Buzzword kids can try to categories that. :) Probably no need to point out more…

Anyway, you can jump between posts with arrow keys and view all flash stuff in HD video. I do recommend that you view them in realtime if you got device with flash player. They are much faster, sharper and small in file size that way.

Now that this project is done I’ll move on to next one.

One day a month ago when I was supposed to start building a particle engine to new Away3D Molehill my mind started to drift into abstract directions. This often happens to me when I’m in situation where I ‘have to’ do something. It can be cleaning the house, traveling to somewhere or in this case where current work doesn’t instantly take wind under it’s wings. Don’t get my wrong I’m still motivated to create that particle engine. It’s just that chemicals and synapses in our brains takes their own tracks producing distractions all the time. I think we should always follow this animal intuition. (in case it doesn’t cause harm to no-one)

Anyway…

The main reason I chosen Nokia as my mobile (E71) was this little gadget WidSets. It was an excellent little apparatus that formatted the web into little widgets. I could easily use my favorite internet data only with few clicks. Stuff like Finnish news, Bus schedules, Wikipedia, Facebook, few internet magazines etc. I have used it something like 3 years about 3-5 times a day.

Few days ago the Corporate decided to close the whole service. It “evolved” into Nokia Ovi Store. What a mother lode of bullshit. Instead of using the service I can now buy some useless little apps. When things comes to marketing there’s one rule above all and that’s: “Do not lose the trust of a customer”. This is what exactly happened here. I don’t know how much the number of users was at this point but few years ago it was 5 million and now they simply killed the whole thing.

Nokia is the backbone of Finnish economics, but fuck’em. I’ll probably select iPhone for my next cellphone. The thrust trust is gone.

… well just wanted to announce that I will probably continue to do so for next decade also. Since it’s the only thing I can do properly.

p.s. There’s still some hours left to participate on 25 lines of actionscript contest at www.25lines.com. :)
