Nokia murdered the WidSets

The main reason I chosen Nokia as my mobile (E71) was this little gadget WidSets. It was an excellent little apparatus that formatted the web into little widgets. I could easily use my favorite internet data only with few clicks. Stuff like Finnish news, Bus schedules, Wikipedia, Facebook, few internet magazines etc. I have used it something like 3 years about 3-5 times a day.

Few days ago the Corporate decided to close the whole service. It “evolved” into Nokia Ovi Store. What a mother lode of bullshit. Instead of using the service I can now buy some useless little apps. When things comes to marketing there’s one rule above all and that’s: “Do not lose the trust of a customer”. This is what exactly happened here. I don’t know how much the number of users was at this point but few years ago it was 5 million and now they simply killed the whole thing.

Nokia is the backbone of Finnish economics, but fuck’em. I’ll probably select iPhone for my next cellphone. The thrust trust is gone.

I have now created web basicly daily basis for 10 years

… well just wanted to announce that I will probably continue to do so for next decade also. Since it’s the only thing I can do properly.

p.s. There’s still some hours left to participate on 25 lines of actionscript contest at www.25lines.com. :)

Google Chrome uninstalled (posted with FF)

Like a typical nerd I tried it out. Found it to be the fastest browser ever. Didn’t included my Firefox settings on it! (huh gl) Tried some of my experimentals with it. (I probably don’t own my flashes anymore…)
After reading this post and many others I unistalled it and will never look back. Google is the evil company.

Shame on you. :(

Won at Webby Awards

UpmForestLife
Winner in Webby Awards, Corporate communications: UPM Forest Life

The world is full of ridiculous awards about websites. It gotta be a good business to create a competition and ceremony about web. First you require a fee from companies to get nominated. Full the ceremonies with sponsors and sell tickets for unreasonable price. To get every penny out of it there has to be a book about the ‘winners’ afterwards.

This one is “the Oscar’s of the web with over 10,000 websites from over 60 countries” plaa plaa plaa.

How about sending me and other team members a ticket to New York with Hollywood filmstar type of -treatment in best hotels, personal limusine driver and endless flood of Champagne. Then I would compare it to Oscars other then just another exploitation of idiots. ;)

Ok, that was a bit too harsh. These awards probably helps with the selling and they look nice on workers CV. It’s also a very good way to enlarge the audience for the site. I still think there’s just too many awards on web these days. One would be enough for the global scale.

Quicky answer to feedback from cosmos

First for all I’m grateful of all those 2000 comments I’ve received from cosmos.
It seems that the navigation and some of the solutions irritates some people. In other hand some people are very pleased to see a different angle.

“immediately I’m lost as to what the left-hand navigation represents, because there is no roll-over hints or text. What does it represent? What does it do? Do you care? Please add captions to navigation.”

“whats up with the friggin navigation on this site man??????????”

“don’t understand anything on your website !!”

For these I can proudly say: Yes, I do not care. On my little corner on web I can experiment without restrictions. This is not a service nor a store. It’s simply there only because I had an ambition to build it. I felt like not adding any hints into navigation and for some reason I draw those odd icons. So like in real cosmos things just are the way they went and we need to coupe with that.

Something will pop up soon from my smithery

I’m currently (=allways) working on a personal project after a day work. This time a bit different. I’m developing a band site for a co-worker with a slightly different angle, so to speak. If everything goes right with the recordings the site will be up in three weeks.

I’m as excited about this that I was with cosmos back in… Huh.. I just realized that it has been allmost two years since that was released and this will be the first website as personal project since that! Seems that I lost my webdesign-self into Demoscene coding for a long time. Well I learned alot.
